Boiler Grants in Scotland: Who Is Eligible?

The main route to a funded boiler in Scotland is the Scottish Government's Warmer Homes Scotland scheme, entered through Home Energy Scotland. Eligibility rules change, so this page explains the basics and how to check your own situation.

What is Warmer Homes Scotland?

Warmer Homes Scotland is a Scottish Government scheme that pays for energy efficiency improvements in eligible homes. Funded measures include central heating, such as a new gas boiler, as well as insulation and other upgrades. Applications start with Home Energy Scotland, not with a plumbing company.

How do I find out if I qualify?

Contact Home Energy Scotland on 0808 808 2282 or use the eligibility check on their website. They will ask about your home and household and tell you whether you can apply.

What did the published criteria say?

The Scottish Government's mygov.scot page (last updated July 2024) set out requirements including that you own your home or rent privately, have lived there for at least six months, use it as your main home, are in council tax bands A to G, have a home with a poor energy rating, and meet an additional household condition (for example, being over 75 with no working central heating, or receiving certain benefits).

Do not rely on that list as current. In July 2025 Home Energy Scotland announced that more people had become eligible, with eligibility depending on factors such as age, income, health and how efficient the home is. The detailed current criteria are not reproduced here because they change. Check directly.

What if I don't qualify?

If you aren't eligible, you can still get a fixed-price quote from us for a new boiler. Ask us for a free survey and an itemised quote. Our guide to boiler installation cost in Edinburgh explains what the price covers.

Things to watch for

  • Be wary of anyone who phones or knocks and promises a "free boiler" to everyone. Applications go through Home Energy Scotland.
  • Funded work is arranged through the scheme. Check who will carry it out before you agree to anything.
  • Whoever fits a gas boiler must be Gas Safe registered. See who can install a boiler in Edinburgh.

McInally's does not process grant applications. This page is general guidance, not advice on your eligibility.
